Deleting a Gmail account is not a single action. It is a choice between three different outcomes. You can delete only Gmail and keep your Google Account for YouTube, Drive, and Photos. You can delete the entire Google Account, which wipes everything tied to it. Or you can simply remove the account from one device without deleting it anywhere. Each path has different consequences and different steps. This guide covers all three, with steps for Android, iPhone, and computer.
Before you start: protect your data
- Download your data first. Go to takeout.google.com, deselect everything, then select only the services you want to save. Choose your delivery method and create the export. Do not save the archive to the Drive you are about to delete.
- Move your sign-ins. If your Gmail address is the recovery email for your bank, social media, or other apps, switch them to another address. Password-reset emails sent to a deleted Gmail address go nowhere.
- Know that the address is gone for good. A deleted Gmail address cannot be registered again, by you or anyone else.
Option 1: Delete only Gmail (keep your Google Account)
Choose this if you want to stop using the Gmail address but keep your YouTube channel, Drive files, or Play purchases. You will need an alternate email address that is not a Gmail address; it becomes your new sign-in. Once you verify it, the Gmail address is removed from your account, and Google deletes your emails and settings after 30 days.
On a computer
- Go to myaccount.google.com and sign in.
- Click Data & privacy in the left sidebar.
- Scroll to “Data from apps and services you use.”
- Under “Download or delete your data,” click Delete a Google service.
- Sign in again if prompted, then click Delete next to Gmail.
- Enter an alternate email address (not a Gmail address) and click Next.
- Open the email Google sends to that address and verify it. Until you verify, your Gmail address and emails are not removed.
On Android
- Open the Gmail app.
- Tap your profile picture in the top right.
- Tap Manage your Google Account.
- Tap the Data & privacy tab.
- Scroll down and tap Delete a Google service.
- Tap Delete next to Gmail.
- Enter an alternate email address and verify it.
On iPhone
- Open the Gmail app.
- Tap your profile picture in the top right.
- Tap Manage your Google Account.
- Tap the Data & privacy tab.
- Scroll down and tap Delete a Google service.
- Tap Delete next to Gmail.
- Enter an alternate email address and verify it.
Option 2: Delete your entire Google Account
This permanently removes Gmail and every other Google service tied to the account, including Drive, Photos, Calendar, and your YouTube channel. Any subscriptions billed through Google Play are cancelled. If you have a YouTube channel you want to keep, transfer it to another account first.
Google may let you recover a recently deleted account, but it does not publish a fixed window. If you change your mind, act within days, not weeks.
On a computer
- Go to myaccount.google.com and sign in.
- Click Data & privacy in the left sidebar.
- Scroll to “More options” and click Delete your Google Account.
- Enter your password to verify.
- Review what will be deleted.
- Check both acknowledgment boxes.
- Click Delete Account.
On Android
- Open Settings on your phone.
- Tap Google → Manage your Google Account.
- Tap the Data & privacy tab.
- Scroll down and tap Delete your Google Account under “More options.”
- Enter your password.
- Review the information, check the boxes, and tap Delete Account.
On iPhone
- Open the Gmail app (or the Google app).
- Tap your profile picture → Manage your Google Account.
- Tap Data & privacy → Delete your Google Account.
- Enter your password.
- Review the information, check the boxes, and tap Delete Account.
Option 3: Remove a Gmail account from one device only
If you are selling a phone, decluttering, or simply do not want the account on one device, do not delete anything. Remove the account from that device. The account and its data stay untouched, and you can sign in again later.
On Android
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accounts (or Users & accounts, or Passwords & accounts, depending on your phone).
- Tap the Google account you want to remove.
- Tap Remove account, then confirm.
Alternative: open the Gmail app, tap your profile picture → Manage accounts on this device → select the account → Remove account.
On iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts. (On older iOS versions: Mail → Accounts.)
- Tap the Gmail account.
- Tap Delete Account, then confirm.
Alternative: open the Gmail app, tap your profile picture → Manage accounts on this device → Remove from this device.
To sign out of Gmail in Safari, open Gmail in the browser, tap the menu, and choose Sign out of all accounts.
You can add the account back later; see our guide to creating or adding a Gmail account on iPhone.
On a computer
- Go to myaccount.google.com and sign in.
- Click Security in the left sidebar.
- Scroll to “Your devices” and click Manage all devices.
- Click the computer you want to sign out, then click Sign out.
Quick comparison: which action does what?
| What you do | What gets deleted | What stays | Can you undo it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delete only Gmail | Gmail address (once you verify the alternate email); emails and settings after 30 days | Google Account, YouTube, Drive, Photos, Play purchases | Sometimes. The address may be recoverable, but older emails may not come back |
| Delete whole Google Account | Everything: Gmail, Drive, Photos, Calendar, YouTube, Play purchases and subscriptions | Other Google Accounts you own | Only for a short, unpublished period after deletion |
| Remove account from a device | That device’s access to mail, contacts, and settings | The account itself and all its data | Yes. Just sign in again |
How to recover a deleted account
- Go to accounts.google.com/signin/recovery (or g.co/recover).
- Enter the deleted address.
- Complete the verification steps Google provides.
If you deleted only the Gmail service, Google notes you may be able to get the address back, but if it has been a while, your old emails may not return. The sooner you try, the better your chances.
One more thing: Google deletes inactive accounts
Google can delete personal accounts that have not been used for 2 years. Signing in, reading an email, watching a YouTube video, or using “Sign in with Google” all count as activity. If you want to keep an account you rarely use, sign in at least once every few months.

Conclusion
Deleting a Gmail account is straightforward once you know which outcome you want. Delete only Gmail if you want to keep your Google Account for other services. Delete the whole Google Account only if you are ready to lose everything tied to it. And if you just want the inbox off one phone or computer, remove the account from that device. It is the only option you can undo simply by signing back in. Download your data first, move your sign-ins, and choose the path that matches your goal.
